How to edit Image ALT Tags

What is an image alt tag?

ALT tags are “alternative text ” for an image. ALT tags are used to describe the image or what the image is representing. One of the main purposes of ALT tags is for the benefit of visually impaired users who use screen readers when browsing. As with many website specifics, ALT tags also play a role in SEO. ALT tags help search engines associate images with a webpage ‘s content so they can properly index it within their search results. ALT tags also help search engines determine the best results to provide when a user searches for images.

  1. Navigate to the “Media” section in the WordPress dashboard.

  2. Click on the image you would like to update in the “Media” library grid. Once an image has been selected, a new window will appear with the image’s SEO settings on the right side. To update the image alt tag, edit the content in the “Alternative Text” text area.

  3. After you complete your edits, simply click on the “X” in the top right to save your updates to the image SEO settings.
